Consequences for people close to you
Most people don’t realise that going through a very stressful event changes you as a person, sometimes in a positive way, and sometimes in a negative sense. "An overwhelming, distressing experience won’t let go”; “you become a different person after a shocking experience" are common statements. The consequences of a very stressful event are borne by the person who has directly experienced it but also by their partner, children, parents and others around them. Loved ones of people who have endured distressing events are indirectly confronted with this.
When survivors of an overwhelming, distressing event suffer complaints, this is also taxing for their partner.
They often find it difficult to share what they have been through and how this impacts their life. Contact and intimacy may change.
